HAPPY ST PATRICK'S DAY! AN IRISH HOLIDAY DATING BACK TO THE LATE 400'S, AD.

St Patrick was a 5th-century Romano-British Christian missionary and bishop in Ireland. Known as the "Apostle of Ireland", he is the primary patron saint of Ireland. When he was about 16, St. Patrick was kidnapped from his home in Great Britain, and taken as a slave to Ireland, where he lived for six years before escaping and returning to his family. After becoming a cleric, he returned to northern and western Ireland. In later life, he served as an ordained bishop.
Saint Patrick's Day is observed on 17 March, the date of his death. It is celebrated inside and outside Ireland as a religious and cultural holiday. In the dioceses of Ireland, it is both a solemnity and a holy day of obligation; it is also a celebration of Ireland itself.

Irish and non-Irish alike commonly participate in the “wearing of the green”—sporting an item of green clothing or a shamrock, the Irish national plant, in the lapel. Corned beef and cabbage are associated with the holiday, and even beer is sometimes dyed green to celebrate the day. Although some of these practices eventually were adopted by the Irish themselves, they did so largely for the benefit of tourists.

Here in Chicago, the river is dyed a bright green. The color orange is actually used to turn the river it's fluorescent green.

CHEF GEORGE DURAN AND PAM AT THE INTERNATIONAL HOME AND HOUSEWARES SHOW!

While attending the International Home and Housewares Show this past Sunday, March 17th, I was very excited to turn the corner of the aisle and came face to face with Chef and Entertainer: George Durand! You may remember him from his popular tv show: Ham on the Street. A humorous and informative exploration of a different food topic, ranging from the straight forward to the obscure. George would quiz regular people he randomly met on the street to test their knowledge of food.
George was very accommodating and let me have my pic taken with him. George was steaming pot stickers in a Chinese Bamboo steamer and serving them with a sweet and spicy sauce with sriracha. YUM!

CELBRATE ST. PATRICK'S DAY WITH THESE DECADENT CHOCOLATE GANACHE MINT BROWNIES!

I would like to share this recipe for all you choco-mint lovers.
Warning: These brownies will bring your taste buds salivating for more. Super rich and worth the calories! I recommend you save 1/2 the batch for yourself and share the rest with friends, family and co-workers. They are so scrumptious, you may get a promotion!

DECADENT CHOCOLATE GANACHE MINT BROWNIES
STEP 1, the BROWNIE:
1 Cup Sugar 4 Eggs
1 Cup Butter or 1/2 teaspoon salt
Margarine, softened 2 teaspoons vanilla
1 Cup Flour 16 ounces Chocolate Syrup
*I recommend Hershey's

STEP 2, the MINT FROSTING:
2 Cups Powdered Sugar
1/2 Cup Butter or Margarine, softened
2-3 Tablespoons Creme de Menthe or Mint Flavoring

STEP 3, the GANACHE:
8 Ounces Chocolate Chips
6 Tablespoons Butter

STEP 1:
Preheat oven to 350. Line 9"x13" pan with parchment paper, going up sides. Spray with Cooking Oil.
Using hand held mixer, combine all ingredients together from STEP 1 in a bowl.
Mix thoroughly, 3-4 minutes, watch for flour on the bottom of the bowl.
Pour brownie mix into greased pan and smooth evenly.
Bake 30 minutes.
Cool to warm to the touch. This allows the mint frosting to spread, easily.

STEP 2:
While brownies are cooking, prepare Steps 2 & 3
In separate bowl: using hand held mixer, mix ingredients from STEP 2, frosting should be easy to spread.
Cover with plastic wrap to keep soft. Add a little milk if it becomes stiff.

STEP 3:
Melt chocolate chips and butter in a microwave safe bowl for 1 minute, stir. If not completely melted, continue to microwave at 30 second intervals and stir. DO NOT burn chocolate.
Let cool.

Once the brownies have cooled slightly, about 30 minutes, spread the mint frosting evenly over the brownie, being careful not to tear the brownie top.
Put pan in freezer for 10 - 15 minutes.

Remove pan from freezer and drizzle ganache over top, spreading a thin layer.
Freeze for 10 -15 minutes.

Remove brownies from pan carefully to a cutting board.
Cut brownies into 1"x1" squares.
Relax and enjoy!

P.S. I will be making them this weekend for my 2 college boys, they love them!

Comparing last February, 2013 to this February, 2014, the Real Estate Market is down in number of sales transactions. This is largely due to the fact that there is ½ the inventory on the market today as there was last year this time. On a positive note, Median Sale prices continue to climb gradually.

The reason for the low inventory; is the above average snow fall for the Chicago area. 2014 will be noted as the 3rd snowiest winter since the early 1900’s. Right now we are over 4 feet above our average snow fall. The freezing temperatures and below zero wind chills have kept people staying inside their warm cozy homes.
